Why do we still create bases?
Most of the dolls are baseless now, or made with an original base. Most of the bases only seem to be some kind of 'inspiration' to look at, but not to use anymore. And many bases are used to create stolen art/bases.

I'm sick of it. I'm in the mood to stop releasing my bases. Private ones make dolls more unique, and can't be stolen/frankenbased so easily.
Greetings to all art-thieves; I hope you're happy now.

EDIT:
-----------------------------------------------------
I'll think about what to do now. Maybe I can organize some kind of a (free) member area at my site, so people have to register to get my bases. Or similar.

MY SITE IS DOWN because I made a mistake when updating Joomla (the system behind the site). I'm not sure yet, but it looks like all my content needs to be created again. (I still have the files, but all the sites are deleted probably....and this was the greatest work when creating my site XD)
So...please be patient, it can take some weeks/months to get up everything again. I'll let you know, when it's up again.

This not cool at all your a wonderful base maker and doller and for her to have the nerves to post that base on a doll form and wouldn't think you the original maker not see that she make a base that was not hers to begin with your work and pass it off as her need to know she hurting the ones who do follow your rules and miss out on good base from you. I'm truly sorry this happen to you I hope you don't stop making wonderful base but I hope you make it where if some one want to used your bases that they really are truly going to used it for what they said they going to do with it and if they don't they should not be allow to used it.

The problem is that there's is not variety in the bases. Yeah, sounds fool, but it's true. It's easy to make a simple pose, one hand on the waist and a loose arm. But there's no bases that allow us to make a witch, or a running doll, or a benefic pose for a kind of creation.
That's why people make their own bases or baseless dolls.
It don't means that you must stop, a lot of people uses your bases and likes it. Always will be like this, people who makes your own bases and people that make bases for others use it.
I hope you think better at it :) I love your bases, I already used it a lot, people uses it a lot too. There's a lot of people, the most, that can't make a base for yourself and them they needs yours. It's natural someone learn to make your own bases and, a lot of them learned a bit with already-make bases ^^
Please, keep doing it =)

Awww :( It's so sad to read this kind of journal! Because You're one of the most creative and best basemaker in dolling world. I just LOVE your bases and our community will be very empty without your works, really  But if you want to stop - it's ok, it's your decision.

Why creating bases? Well, when the Eden was alive i thought making bases is some kind of collaboration. It builded a net of people who want to work together to have fun. It was really big happiness to look at people dolling on your base and dolling on other people's bases. (Omg, my english sucks, sorry ==). It was simply fun and enjoing hobby! And now? We are between two different worlds - people, who product crappy bases for people, who don't want to improve in dolling. And second - people, who don't want to participate in this and want to pixel all by themselfs because of fear of tracing and participating in this shi...ekhem.

I don't know. I miss the time when dolling was fun :(

You deleted all your articles???

They are still in the trash, in that case.

It will be very easy to set up a members only area for bases. If you need help, you know where you can find your own personal joomla expert, right?

*looks angelic*

You never did upload bases to Pixistar, did you,...?

I didn't delete them, but I was online at the same time my boyfriend made an update of Joomla >.> And now the database crashed (I guess) because I was logged in at this time. And now I can't access my adminpanel, so I can't do a backup of my articles; only my files via FTP.

Pixistar....some bases are there, but I was a bit too lazy, because it took so long to upload a base *blush*.

But I'm trying out something new at the moment....and if it will work properly...;)

If you want your bases removed from Pixistar, btw, and it's not going fast enough, let me know. I can delete them for you. But if you're okay with having a few bases there, sort of as an advert for your site, that would be lovely too.

Well, I'm devastated that has happened to you. I've been around the dolling scene for a long time and it still amazes me how people blindly steal artwork.
I will be very sad to see your bases go into hiding. Though I've never had the courage to (in my opinion), destroy your lovely bases with my attempts at dolling, they still are a credit to the dolling community.
I would say private disruption would be good, the only problem is if forum based, it will still allow stealing bastards to come in... and personally sending them will be a headache ><! Just can't win with thieves about!
I'm even more worried for my base I just released after reading this journal.
But chin up. Plagiarism is so fucking annoying but its a compliment they are striving for your skill, in a very pixel morbid way.

What exactly happened Mariii? Sorry, I've been out of the loop in the dolling world since I deployed but I did finally get my laptop and started finishing some of my WIPs. If I read your journal correctly, did someone take your bases as their own? If so, that's a first that I've seen (then again I obviously haven't seen much lately). Usually people frankendoll or steal a whole doll and claim it. I would totally support your decision if you choose to stop releasing bases. It's your choice and there's no amount of fan-love that can oppose that, lol.

A frankendoller made a base out of my bases (two of mine), and called it hers. After contacting her, she said 'she didn't notice'. And her sister asked me, please not to bann her of the forum.
One day later, the sister of the frankendoller released a new base, stolen from Ninique. I visited her website, and there she even has released a base-collab between my bases and Silindors >.>
And she just doesn't understand, she did someting wrong...!!

Wow... just wow. I highly doubt this "sister" even exists. It's an old ploy back in the "early dolling world". She's not on dA, is she? I would have her IP banned on the forum and encourage other forums to do the same for at least a certain amount of time, at least until she has proven that she cleaned up her act.

Awe, but I love your bases...

I'm not to good at making bases or making baseless dolls, so I still use other people's bases. I try all the time and fail.

It sucks that some people are ruining it for everyone. It's really up to you, though. Just remember, lots of people love your bases.

I remember this one time, somebody stole a doll of mine and put it on their website claiming it was theirs. Yeah, I was pissed and stopped posting my dolls for a while (I think I even made a new dA account after I started again), so I understand.

If you do stop making bases, the pixel-world will have to hold a funeral in honor of your bases, because you're certainly a big player in pixelling. We'd miss your bases.

i use bases because i find it challenging and interesting to take a piece of pixel work started by someone else and then add my own touch to it. I have a style, especially with sketching the female form, and using bases lets me use someone elses style as a starting block.

i love your bases, and i'm sorry someone's pissing you off, if you don't want to make any more bases then don't. this is for fun, a hobby, maybe not worth all the drama but still. i hope that you keep your released ones released :D :D

The whole base idea doesn't really sit well with the rest of dA outside of the category anyway; if you don't want to release them anymore, don't. The ones you've already made will be floating around somewhere probably.

I use bases all of the time because one, I don't sketch, two, even if I could I don't have a scanner, and three, I'm not great with anatomy, especially creating it from scratch. I can't start from the ground up just yet. Plus, I just picked up dolling again in January after an extended Hiatus.

I didn't know that most dollers don't use bases anymore; am I part of a growing minority then?

There are still many who use bases, but baseless is a trend; because it makes work more unique, and you probably don't get comments like 'it's not your work' or soemting.

I've tried working with someone else's base but it's actually much harder for me to work with someone else's style when I'm pixeling because I've been doing it long enough that I'm just really used to my own. Some people prefer to pixel on a base (their own or an adopted one) but some others prefer to pixel from their own sketches. My preference may come from the fact that my other pixel art came years before I tried a doll. I may not be great at it but I'm worse when I try to work off someone else's base. ^^;

I will say though, I have seen plenty of people that work best off of adopted bases and do amazing work with them. There's still a need for them, it's just kind of hard to see for various reasons. One of them being similar to why I don't use bases, the other being the amount of theft on this site confusing everyone to what a base is and what it is used for.

I wish dA would crack down on the tracing people have done, I wish they'd crack down on the miscats since I've seen quite a few "bases" that were not even trying to be pixel art and were meant for people to draw on them, not to use as dolls. So many people are lazy but still want pictures of their super special snowflake OC so, instead of practicing, they draw on these awful things that call themselves bases (even some of the ones that are at least trying to be pixel art if they're big enough). I'm not saying a good doll can't be done in other ways, there is a tool category for a reason besides those people, but this stuff is flooding the galleries here (and especially the base galleries) which I'm guessing also makes it hard to find good doll bases if you're new here or new to the concept of dolling. It also makes less people want to get into dolling because of that is the public face of what a base is on this site so, like when vector traces were big and people didn't know what vectoring really was, people place blame in the wrong direction.

I'm sorry, I've gone off on a slightly irrelevant rant. ^^; Based just on the comments here I can tell there are plenty of people who want to keep using your bases so I hope you don't stop releasing them for their sake and the people who enjoy the results. Your dolls are beautiful and you make wonderful bases, I would hate to see people who enjoy doing so not get a chance to do so any more. Maybe, if you feel it would make it harder for art thieves to find your bases, you could put them on a Photobucket account (which you can mark as private so the only way to see something is if you link it) and link the bases in your journals so your watchers can still find the bases and use them, at least then they wouldn't be in the gallery so anyone just looking their wouldn't be able to find them. I hope it doesn't come to that though, people like that shouldn't be allowed to bring everyone else down with them.

I understand and totally agree. All of these (mostly and usually poorly shaded with very little effort or creativity put into the deviation) traced bases flooding the category really suck. People are constantly getting the wrong idea as far as what dolling is about. So, now more than ever, whenever a base gets a DD, people flame the artist just because they have incorrect, preconceived ideas about what a base is, and the amount of effort a doller is supposed to put into their work.

Apparently there is a category for traced bases now so I guess they have to be reported as miscats instead of violations of copyright. Part of me wants to believe this will be good for cleaning up the gallery but the rest of me is sad they are even allowing it. I wish I could track down all the artists that have been traced from and tell them so they could report it themselves (as dA would actually listen to them) but these people just link the picture directly from Photobucket or something similar and apparently that is enough to make it ok. :(

I remember seeing this with vectors a few years ago when it was popular to use Illustrator to trace screen shots and I hate that I've been seeing it in the doll gallery for a while now. There were people that assumed that vectoring really just meant tracing and, from the looks of it, there are no people that think that bases are all traced from pictures and there are plenty of those same people that assume it's something to draw on and excuse it by saying they can't draw instead of taking the time to practice. When I see those I usually suggest they start practicing or learn how to make pixel art and use real, original bases for what they were made for. I can't say anything to the tracers who make the so called bases though, at least not without getting mad. I don't know how anyone would think it was ok to trace someone else's work and post it anywhere.

I don't even understand where the fun is. For the hell of it I traced over and altered a Pokemon trainer sprite out of curiosity (I was seeing more sprite recolours back then) and it was so much less fun than making a sprite from scratch. Those people must not enjoy art at all. :c

D= But you make some of my favorite bases!

Lots of people may be going baseless now, but there are still the newer dollers who might not feel good enough to go baseless, and so they need bases in order to make their dolls. I most still use bases. I've made two baseless dolls, but I don't think they're very good so I don't have the confidence to it a lot yet. In two years I've only just reached the point where I want to try doing more and more edits on bases when I doll my characters.
